Pass 1 treebanking includes the following 5 points of annotation. Pass 1 is intended primarily to provide partially done trees as input to Pass 2.
1. Mark the leading banner/byline information in the first paragraph of the news story as X. (This information will not be included as a part of the sentence.)
2. Mark the entire sentence, including the final punctuation, as S. Also mark any coordinated or subordinate clauses as S. For subordinate clauses, mark the subordinator and the S as an SBAR.
3. Mark everything from the verb to the last word as VP. Include any verbal particles (la, lam, etc.) preceding the verb itself in the VP, but do not include final punctuation.
4. Mark prepositional phrases as PP.
5. Mark noun phrases as NP. So far as you are comfortable doing so, include as many of the modifiers and arguments of the noun as possible in the NP. However, all difficult decisions, problematic cases, and in general anything that takes a significant amount of time to decide should be left for Pass 2. Do not label NPs for function, and do not worry about the argument/adjunct distinction (this will be done in Pass 2).
Use the comment field to signal any transliteration problem, and suggest the necessary correction (e.g., "Verb at index 31 should be in the passive").
