Prefrontal cortex and the hierarchical control of behavior

Cognitive control refers to our ability to internally guide our

thoughts and actions based on plans, goals, and our current context.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is known to be essential to cognitive

control function.  However, the organization of the frontal cortex

remains a source of considerable controversy.  This talk will describe

a recent line of research in our lab that tests the hypothesis that

the PFC may be organized according to a control hierarchy along its

rostro-caudal axis. Evidence from fMRI and neuropsychological studies

will be presented that test this hypothesis during action selection

and learning.
