Printer installation guide for Windows XP & 2000

NOTE: This process may look slightly different in Windows 2000, but the steps are the same.

First click on the Start button then navigate to "Printers and Faxes" and click on it.

Once the "Printers and Faxes" menu has loaded double click on "Add Printer."

When the "Add Printer" wizard pops up, click "Next."

In this next menu you want to select the "Local printer attached to this computer" radio button, and make sure that "Automatically detect and install..." is UNCHECKED. After these two options are set, click "Next."

In this menu select the "Create a new port" radio button, and in the dropdown menu select "Standard TCP/IP Port," now click "Next."

The next menu should say "Welcome to the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard", just click "Next."

At this menu you should type in the printer's IP address, which can be gotten from the main printer page (just click back.) After getting the IP address you should type it in in the "Printer Name or IP Address" text box, the "Port Name" box should automatically fill as you type in the first one. After this click "Next."

The next menu should display the printer port configuration, just click "Finish."

Now you must select the printer's model so that the wizard knows which driver to install. Select the proper manufacturer and then printer model. After seecting the proper make and model of your printer, please click "Next."

NOTE: If the exact model of your printer is not listed here you can most of the times get away with select a number close to your model, this is especially true with HP printers.

Now you must name the printer, what you choose to name the printer does not matter, it is only for your computer however you should name it something that makes sense.

At this next screen make sure that the "Do not share this printer" radio button is selected and then click "Next."

And then at this screen make sure that the "Yes" radio button is selected so that a test page is printed and click "Next."

At this point you are finished installing your printer, just click the "Finish" button and it should install some files and in the "Printers and Faxes" menu an icon should now show with the name that you named the printer. Congratulations.
