Semantic Representation in Judgment and Decision Making
I discuss how findings from semantic memory research and computational linguistics can be used to build models of judgment and decision making with human-like knowledge representations. These models specify the heuristics used to assess probabilities and evaluate outcomes, as well as the information on which these heuristics operate. Subsequently, they are able to deliberate over and respond to a large variety of naturalistic decision problems, and moreover, mimic human behavior on these problems. These models shed light on the processes involved in everyday judgment and decision making, and show how insights from diverse areas in psychology can be combined in order to develop powerful new theories of high-level cognition.
