Welcome to the site of the interdisciplinary graduate training program in Language and Communication Sciences (LCS) at the University of Pennsylvania, funded by an Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) grant from the National Science Foundation. The LCS program brings together students and faculty from diverse backgrounds and expertise who share an interest in understanding the computational and neural underpinnings of linguistic and nonlinguistic communication.

Topics of interest include: How is a language learned? How are languages created and how do they change over time? What are the properties of animal communication systems? And how/why did language evolve in humans? What are the computations that underlie communicative systems, such that they allow for efficient learning and use? How is this computational system instantiated in the brain? These are some of the core questions drive communication research at Penn, which spans the fields of anthropology, biology, computer science, neuroscience, linguistics, psychology and philosophy.
